James and Mary Avant had five children:

- Jessie W. Avant (b. 1885);
- George S. Avant (1887-1974)
James died 20 June 1919 in Walden, Bibb County, Georgia. He and his wife were buried at Liberty Chapel Cemetery in Bibb County, Georgia. An obituary for James R. Avant:

"James R. Avant, aged 71, died last night at his home near Walden. Mr. Avant was a Confederate veteran, being a member of the R. A. Smith camp. He is survived by the following brothers: L. M. Avant, Macon; George W. Avant, Riverside, Cal.; one sister, Mrs. Martha Livenster, and the following children: Mrs. J. F. Hammock, Mrs. E. W. Lipford, Miss Jessie Avant, and George S. Avant. Funeral will be held at Liberty Chapel (this Sunday) afternoon..."
